Melbourne Energy Consumption Facts

No matter what sort of house you live in, or where you work, every day we all consume energy in Melbourne. Think back to the last time you experienced a black out, was it a little unsettling, did you find yourself unable to continue on with your everyday activities?

Energy is something we all use day in, day out. It’s become so much an integral part of our lives that most of us wouldn’t even consider where it comes from, or how much we use (until, of course, it comes to paying our electricity & gas bills!). It may be worthwhile to compare electricity prices, as you will save money, reduce your energy consumption  and do your bit to save the environment too.

Here are some simple facts about energy consumption in Melbourne and Victoria:
Between 2004 and 2005, 49% of our energy was supplied by the burning of coal. Of that, 90% of the coal burned was brown coal, considered to be the “dirtiest” form of coal. Brown coal produces 1.392 kg of CO2e per kilowatt-hour, that’s a lot of carbon emissions every day.

Data shows that the average household uses 59% of their energy consumption on space heating (such as air-conditioners, oil heaters and so on). When you consider how energy inefficient the typical home is, it’s clear that a lot of this energy consumption of wasted.

A further 21% of a typical household’s consumption is used on water heating. Again, this number could be vastly reduced if more people implemented some form of solar heating.
